Once again, Sean the outside viewer has it right. If that is not a division among the people then someone explained it wrong to you. What's the difference here, 3.6 mil?
Just because your guy won doesn't mean this country is unified. It's pretty clear that nearly half of the country disagrees.
And then of course, there's the extra 1% that nobody is naming.
A good point was made in the book I read recently "How They Became President". The author pointed out the fact that in almost every presidential election almost 1/2 of the electorate did not vote for the winner. Very few landslides have given presidents a "mandate". Reagan's in 1984 was the most recent. Even FDR who was elected 4x never had the kind of majority he enjoyed in his first victory in 1932. The country may well be "divided" but not enough to change horses midstream...not enough to drastically alter course like the VietNam protests caused Nixon to win in 1968, nor like the "punishment" the voters sent to the Republicans for Ford pardoning Nixon and losing to Carter in 1976.
